Earlier this month, the Office of the Vice President for Research hosted state legislators on a tour of some of the University of Iowa’s leading-edge research and scholarship activities. We visited the labs of two space science superstars: Craig Kletzing, whose team recently won a $115 million grant from NASA to study the powerful interactions between the magnetic fields of the sun and Earth, and David Miles, who has built a furnace that can heat objects to more than 2,900 degrees Fahrenheit—hotter than lava—to manufacture a critical space-instrument component that is in desperately short supply in the United States.

University of Iowa students are working to test equipment they built to see how it could hold up in space. three undergraduate students designed geiger tubes, which can detect radiation. they're similar to what iowa physicist james van allen used in 1958 for america's first orbiting satellite. students built the pieces in what in now known as van allen hall, named after the physicist. they'll put their geiger tubes in a machine that mimics the conditions of space to see how they'd hold up. "it's been the whole summer that we've been working on it. it's coming to a completion here in the next few weeks. this is the biggest test that we'll be doing to determine if we are flight ready. " if all goes well they'll team up with i-s-u students to send a balloon 15 miles above the earth's surface. this is a pilot program at the University. instructors are hoping to add the course as a part of permanent curriculum.
